VBS 2012 - Daniel's Courage in Captivity

Hello everyone and welcome to Nonna's Craft Corner!
I hope your week is going well for you.  I've spent the first part of my week cleaning house!  So many of those "routine" cleaning jobs have been put aside while I was working on our VBS set and now that it's's time to clean this house!

Our "VBS Kick-Off Party" was this past Sunday and I'm very thankful to say that the set was completed and ready to be revealed!  The kids loved it and that made all the work worth it!  Now, we cover it back up with our room dividers and wait for VBS which begins on June 3rd.  As promised, I have pictures for you....

Here is what we began with...

tons and tons of cardboard boxes!

Next came cutting and putting boxes together to fit the dimensions and shapes we needed.  After we got our boxes together, we arranged them to create our Babylon scene...

Next we covered the boxes with a drywall mix and started painting...

After everything was painted, the fun part started! Time to decorate!  The "tiles" were actually fabric panels.  It came in long sheets and everything had to be cut out.  Then we used a spray adhesive and glued everything onto the boxes....

The "hedges" are cardboard boxes, cut to size and covered with millions of green streamers cut to about 5 inches each.  Hours and hours and hours and hours!  I took one home to work on and my friend took one home to work on.  Getting it back to the church was the hard part...

These things are 6 feet long, it goes all the way into my front seat!

So, I guess it's back to cleaning this house for me!  Thanks for letting me share something near and dear to my heart with you today!

Until next time,

  1. What lucky children! I believe all of your efforts will make a lasting difference in their lives.

    Thanks for the inspiration,

    Cindy :)

  2. Wow...what an amazing job. Lee-Ann :)

  3. AMAZING!!! What a great set to use for your VBS... wonderful work by all.

  4. What an amazing project! Thanks for sharing!!!

  5. WOW.. that is just awesome.. yes i am sure the kids LOVED it. Thanks for sharing it.

  6. Oh WOW!!! How awesome!!! I love it!! And thanks for letting me know about those ugly paperclips!! :)

  7. How blessed are those kids? Wow! The streamers on the hedges... wow! I would have probably taken the easy route and grown some from seeds. Hee! Hee! Thanks so much for sharing! This is such a great thing to get to see!

  8. Oh my goodness! Wow! Would love to see that in person, its beautiful.

  9. Wow! what a lot of work. You and your hubby are a blessing. Those kids have a wonderful learning experience coming to them. Great job.

  10. VBS is such a special time for kids and you all have made it more so. Our church has put up 'Bethlehem' in the catch basin at Christmas time. Then it's filled with 'citizins', businesses, the synagogue, an inn and of course a stable with a live Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The miniature animals are so cute.

  11. There are no words for how FABULOUS your set is!
The world and the kids in it need more people like you! That is very creative...those kids are so lucky! Great job!

  12. It is amazing! I knew it would be. The kids are blessed to have you guys and will remember what you do forever!

  13. OH WOW!! I love what you've done with all those boxes! The castle courtyard looks absolutely realistic...awesome job! Your kids are going to be amazed and inspired to worship!

I'm knee-deep in VBS prep too. Our church is doing Amazing Wonders Aviation (from Lifeway), so I'm working on making Victoria Falls for our Bible study room. Also using the Beep Beep cartridge to make lots of airplanes. :)

  14. This set is beyond amazing!! I can only imagine how excited the children must have been to see this and to be part of it!
(And I'm a bit baffled... There's a basketball court in your church? If that's the case, I think my husband would like to convert!! He LOVES basketball!)
